Black Tie empowers youth with Junior Achievement BC

ja

Last week, Phyllis and Sebastien went to A.R. MacNeil Secondary and volunteered their time to “Empower young people to own their economic success.”  “Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business. With over 120 charters worldwide, JA brings a global view of business to local communities. They partner with educators, donors and volunteers to bring a real world experience into the classroom. Their programs give students the confidence and skills they need to become the next generation of business and community leaders. ”

Here’s what Sebastien Nault, owner of Black Tie Property Services has to say about his volunteer experience.

“Volunteering for JA is a rewarding experience because it gives you an opportunity to connect with youth.  Every time I enter the classroom, I am impressed by how smart these kids are and how much they know.  I wish that I had someone to explain money management to me at their age, because it would have saved me a lot of trouble and heartache.  The main reason I volunteer with JA is so I can share my firsthand experience, and so that these kids can learn from my mistakes. “

We had such a great time volunteering with youth that we created this list to share with you:

5 reasons volunteering is awesome!

1. It’s for a good cause: It’s rewarding to know that something you do can contribute to helping others.  It’s these actions that give you those warm and fuzzy feelings.

2. Community and Connections: Through volunteerism, you have the opportunity to create connections with people of all different age groups and backgrounds over a higher purpose.  Something bigger than yourself.

3. Knowledge & Learning: There’s always opportunity to gain experience and learn more about a specified area, possibly about yourself and also about other people.

4. Fun: Volunteering is a fun way to explore your interests and passions.  It can be an interesting and meaningful way to spend your time and gain new experiences.

5. It can make you happier: Studies have shown that volunteering can give you the feeling of having more time (oddly enough), create social bonds to make you feel more loved and give you greater satisfaction in life.  You can read more on that here:  http://blog.movingworlds.org/volunteering-makes-you-happier/

Hope you enjoyed reading this post.  If you had a great volunteer experience you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you!

New Post-Construction Video & Pictures

2014 was a busy year for our post-construction crew. They worked on several projects for Ledcor, Bosa, Axiom and Polygon, to name but a few. Our in-house videographer extraordinaire, Rob, has put together a short demo video, explaining our procedures.

We are excited to share the video and the “Best of“, hand-picked from all our construction site pictures from last year. Enjoy!

At Black Tie we are proud to take part in working with the latest exciting projects, especially when they are forecasted to become B.C. landmarks!  Here’s the latest project feature we’d love to share with you.  Currently we are working on the post construction clean on Sovereign by Bosa.

Being one of the tallest towers in the Lower Mainland, Sovereign poses some interesting technical challenges for our crew. Being outside of the height allowed by Worksafe BC for rope access work, we have to use suspended scaffolds (swing stages) to gain access to the glass. Once the building is completed and occupied, a permanent system will be installed by Tractel to allow maintenance crews access to the exterior of the building.

Sovereign_DavidThe hotel portion, located in the bottom part of the building, will need to be ready for occupancy before the residential portion of the building. Therefore, our team has been hard at work, using rope access and aerial lifts to clean the lower 5 levels of the tower. Meanwhile, the crew working on the top portion of the tower is following closely behind the painters, giving the windows and balconies their final clean.

We are proud to work in partnership with our good friends at White Knight Janitorial, and to be part of this landmark project.

Day at IREM’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament

The conditions were perfect.   The sky was blue, the sun was shining and everyone was in a wonderful mood. This was the perfect day for golf, or if like me you are not an avid golfer then the perfect day be outside working at a fun event like this one.

I’m talking about the 19th annual golf tournament held by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM BC).  This was our second year in a row sponsoring Chip for Charity.  And this year with the help of our lovely participants, we raised three hundred and forty dollars in donations for the B.C. Childeren’s Hospital. We donated a sweet Bose music lover’s travelling prize package from Best Buy valued at approximately $700.  The lucky winner this year won noise cancelling headphones and a wireless speaker so music can be enjoyed wherever they go!

Lucky Winner!

This year we also organized something extra – business card draws for 2 Cineplex Odeon Prize Packages for date night at the movies.  This included 2 movie admissions, 2 Large Pops and 2 Large popcorn .  The lucky winners of our random draw were Frank Wood from Baywest Management Corp. and Branko Cvoric from Gateway Property Management.  Congrats you two! Hope you enjoy your movie dates!

After a full day on the course, we had a delicious buffet dinner.  The dinner included barbecue steak and salmon, and even though I am a vegetarian, there were plenty of great food options to choose from.  Also, it was nice to unwind, hang out and mingle with the industry folk.  There were some incredible prizes to win this year including an Ipad, Spa certificates, 1 year golf membership, wine and Fleetwood Mac tickets!  IREM sure knows how to do it right.  Sadly neither of us won anything, but better luck next year right?

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces again next year!
